Ten positions explore a situation in layers, from the central issue to background, outside conditions and a possible direction. This guide uses one stated position order.

Numbers identify positions; the reading sequence is explained below. Other versions may assign different roles.

## Version and dealing convention

This version fixes 3 as the goal, 4 as the foundation, 5 as the past and 6 as the near future. A horizontal 2 is a layout convention, not a reversed card. With the Major Arcana selected, use absolute deck positions 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 19, 20, 21, 22. Other available decks use consecutive random draws.

## Before you draw

- Write one open question and define its scope. Keep factual questions separate from symbolic reflection.

- Choose the position order and decide whether to include reversals before drawing.

- Read each card in its role, then compare the positions. Note uncertainty and one practical next question.

Identify the central theme before expanding into the surrounding positions.

### 2. Crossing influence

Read the crossing card as a challenge or tension, not automatically as an enemy.

### 3. Conscious aim

Consider the goal or ideal you are aware of pursuing.

### 4. Underlying background

Explore a possible foundation, keeping speculation separate from remembered facts.

### 5. Recent past

Reflect on a recent influence that may still matter.

### 6. Near-term direction

Describe a development that depends on current conditions, rather than a promised event.

### 7. My stance

Consider your habits, choices and role in this situation.

### 8. Environment

Identify outside constraints or support that can be checked.

### 9. Hopes and fears

Notice a wish or fear that may colour your reading of the other cards.

### 10. Possible outcome

Summarise a conditional direction and identify what could change it.

## How to connect the positions

Reading sequence (read grouped roles together as explained below): 1 → 2 → 3 → 4 → 5 → 6 → 7 → 8 → 9 → 10

Read 1 and 2 together, then compare the conscious aim in 3 with the background in 4. Trace 5–1–6 as a timeline. Compare your stance in 7 with the environment in 8, and check how 9 may bias the outcome proposed in 10. The horizontal placement of card 2 marks its crossing role; orientation is recorded separately.

## What to watch for

There is no single universal Celtic Cross position order. Choose this order before drawing and do not switch definitions midway.
