Great cross: derived result
Great cross: derived result explores external influences, origin, response and a derived result. The diagram identifies 5 roles; the instructions explain how to draw and read them.
Practice deck: 22 Major Arcana
Version and dealing convention
This page defines one numbered version. The local exercise uses the displayed deck and draw method; other traditions may change the arrangement or roles. Agree on the version before drawing.
A question to try
What would you like to examine about external influences, origin, response and a derived result?
Before you draw
- Write one open question and define its scope. Keep factual questions separate from symbolic reflection.
- Choose the position order and decide whether to include reversals before drawing.
- Read each card in its role, then compare the positions. Note uncertainty and one practical next question.

- 1
External influence A
Use this role to explore “External influence A” in the context of the whole layout, rather than treating the card as a standalone conclusion.
- 2
External influence B
Use this role to explore “External influence B” in the context of the whole layout, rather than treating the card as a standalone conclusion.
- 3
Underlying origin
Use this role to explore “Underlying origin” in the context of the whole layout, rather than treating the card as a standalone conclusion.
- 4
Main response
Use this role to explore “Main response” in the context of the whole layout, rather than treating the card as a standalone conclusion.
- 5
Derived outcome reference
Use this role to explore “Derived outcome reference” in the context of the whole layout, rather than treating the card as a standalone conclusion.
How to connect the positions
Reading sequence (read grouped roles together as explained below): 1 → 2 → 3 → 4 → 5
Draw four Major Arcana for 1–4 and keep their orientations. Add their numbers, using 22 for the Fool; repeatedly sum digits if above 22. Position 5 references the matching card. If it is already in 1–4, reuse that card’s meaning and orientation without drawing a duplicate physical card; otherwise keep its orientation from the shuffled deck. This version shows five interpretive roles but may use only four physical cards.
What to watch for
A symbolic interpretation does not establish hidden facts or guarantee an outcome. Separate observations from assumptions and use direct communication for questions involving another person.
